Sell and Melton, L.L.P. was honored
to have three of its attorneys named as Georgia Rising Stars
by Atlanta Magazine for 2006. Each October Atlanta magazine,
a publication that reaches over 269,600 readers monthly, names
a new group of Rising Stars. Rising Stars is a comprehensive
list of young attorneys honored for their accomplishments
in the past year, as selected by the Georgia Super Lawyers
and through the independent research of Law & Politics. All
Rising Stars are 40 years old or younger or have been in practice
for 10 years or less. Only 2.5 percent of Georgia attorneys
are named Rising Stars.
The Rising Stars are chosen in a variety of firm sizes and
across an array of legal fields. In the area of General Litigation,
Jon R. Hawk, a partner, and Julia
H. Magda, a partner-elect, were recognized this year as
Rising Stars.
On November 17, 2006, the Macon Bar Association recognized
Julia Magda for exemplary community
service, citing her work with Crisis Line & Safe House of
Central Georgia, Inc., the Bar’s Law Day activities, Leadership
Macon, and other worthy organizations. Julia was also named
by Macon Magazine as one of its “Five Under Forty” community
leaders in 2006. Sell & Melton is proud to have attorneys
such as Julia that are actively engaged in making our community
stronger.
On April 20, 2006, Jon R. Hawk served
as a moderator at a program entitled "Special Needs Trusts."
The topic of discussion was "Medicare and Medicaid Liens"
and how to resolve these issues in personal injury cases.
This seminar was presented by the Institute of Continuing
Legal Education and was held at the State Bar of Georgia Headquarters
in Atlanta.
Julia Magda recently participated
as a speaker in a professional seminar hosted by Lorman Educational
Services. A summary of her presentation follows.
Medical Records Law April 26, 2006
Hosted by Lorman Education Services
This program discussed the changes in laws relating to medical
recordkeeping and access, with particular emphasis on recent
changes in the law for AIDS records and psychiatric records,
as well as the legal requirements for complying with subpoenas
and discovery requests. The faculty included experienced health
care attorneys who regularly advise individual and institutional
providers about medical record issues. Emphasized, in particular,
were practical approaches and practical solutions to the growing
problems in this area as well as advice on recordkeeping itself
in light of the growing number of 'outsiders' who may someday
be reviewing a given office's medical records. This one-day
seminar was designed for medical records directors, health
information directors, business managers, office managers,
hospital administrators, compliance directors, nurses, social
workers, release-of-records professionals, and attorneys,
and continuing education credit was offered by various commissions
and boards.
